Middle School Buddies

We visited our middle school buddies for the first time. We read Stellaluna and then created our own bats to make them fly. We attached the bat to a straw and a piece of plastic and then blew in the straw to see how far it would fly. Then we made modifications to our bat by folding the wings a little to see if it would affect the distance. Some learners made the prediction that it would go farther. Then we tried it with thicker straws to see if that would help the bat go farther and indeed it did! Learners made connections that the more air that is blowing would make the bat go higher or farther. They really enjoyed themselves!

This week in second grade...

We have been busy! We have started a new unit on non-fiction reading. Students have been practicing doing their extra "brainy" work to grow knowledge about new topics. Next week, we will be launching our non-fiction writing unit.

Earlier this week students explored book orders to cut out examples of fiction and non-fiction books to get us really thinking about the differences in genres.

Here is a look at what students were wondering while they were reading their non-fiction books.

Last week, we got a new member of our classroom family. Meet Kiki the class fish!

My lunch dates this week were:

We spent some time sharing our small moment narrative stories as we finished up the writing unit this week!

In music class on Wednesday, the entire class received a Happy Notes reward! Usually, Mr. O, chooses one student that went above and beyond showing their best work, being respectful, responsible and safe. This week he said he had trouble choosing, because every single student was doing their best!

Looking forward to another great week next week!

A week of learning

Greetings!

It's been another great week in second grade! We have started WIN time where we have been practicing fluency and getting better at reading second grade words. We have been studying book genres. We explored different book bins and decided what made each bin it's specific genre. We talked specifically about fiction and non-fiction. Below shows some read alouds we have enjoyed this week :)

As part of our classroom economy, students earn special privileges with their classroom money. A popular pass is Lunch with Ms. S. Here are my lunch dates this week :)

Here are some photos from the beginning of the year of our learners exploring our classroom library and math materials.
